Troubleshooting slow Wi-Fi speeds

If your Wi-Fi's running slow, these steps will help you identify the issue.

  1. Run a Speed Test

    1. While standing next to your router, run a speed test using speedtest.net
      1. We do not recommend using Google or other speed test platforms as we have found them to be far less reliable than speedtest.net

  2. Check your Wi-Fi band
    1. Most routers will broadcast two separate Wi-Fi Networks - the newer, faster 5GHz, and the older, slower 2.4GHz.
      1. 2.4GHz Wi-Fi Networks offer greater range while sacrificing speed.
        • If you are experiencing poor signal quality in other rooms of your home, try the 2.4GHz network as is is less affected by obstacles such as walls, and doors.

      2. 5GHz Wi-Fi Networks, while much faster, are very susceptible to interference from obstacles such as walls and doors.
        • If you're in the same room as the Wi-Fi router, then the 5GHz network will give you the best speed possible, but this will deteriorate rapidly as you move into other rooms
  3. Check other areas of your home

    1. If your Wi-Fi speed is only slow in certain parts of your home, check out out guide on troubleshooting poor Wi-Fi signal

  4. Test your Wi-Fi with only one device connected

    1. You may be running more devices, or apps than your connection can handle at the same time.
      1. Disconnect all other devices from your Wi-Fi and any devices connected by Ethernet, and run another speed test.

  5. Contact Support
